ABOUT ARTIST
Kamwei Fong is a Malaysian artist, he works mainly on the animal world, his creations are often
described as minimalistic, elegant, poetic, humourous, imaginative, playful and dream-like.
The Furry Thing is a series of furry animal illustrations first created by Kamwei inadvertently back
in 2009. Using only black micro pigment ink, Kamwei has created a menagerie of playful kitties,
doggies and other animals. Despite their contextual isolation and uniform style, each of
Kamwei’s cats display unique personalities: some are fluffed and puffed into self-contained balls;
others look with curiosity or wariness at fish that dangle or waves that crash from the animals’
own tails. The artist builds each feline form using innumerable short thin lines, varying the
density of the marks to create volume as well as a palpable sense of furriness.
Kamwei's artwork has received global recognition including the exhibitions at Salon des Beaux
Arts in Paris, and Art Expo Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur, collaborating with worldwide fashion giant
Uniqlo in 2020 and 2022. His personal magic moment was when he was the only Malaysian
invited and entered the Paper category of Salon des Beaux Arts 2019 at The Carrousel du
Louvre in Paris, France, in the history of Salon des Beaux Arts exhibition. He attended the
exhibition again in September 2023 to feature his Furry Thing series of artwork at Réfectoire des
Cordeliers, Paris, France. Established in 1862, Société Nationale des Beaux Arts (SNBA)
organises Salon des Beaux Arts to showcase the work of artists with exceptional talent and skills.
He was also invited to showcase his work at the most prestigious art fair in Malaysia, the Art
Expo Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur in 2018 and 2019, The Busan Annual Market of Art (BAMA) 2024,
and his solo exhibition “The Furry Thing By Kamwei Fong” at Next Museum Gallery in Seoul,
South Korea.
In 2021, Kamwei’s first book, “Kamwei Fong – The Furry Thing” Italian/English bilingual edition
was published in Bologna, Italy by Becco Giallo. In 2023, Kamwei was ranked as “Most talented
& Creative Artists in Malaysia - The Top 10” by Top 10 of Malaysia.
Currently, his art pieces, book and merchandise can be found at the galleries and boutiques in
the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Taiwan, Italy, Spain, France, South Korea, Malaysia
and Singapore.
